Sr Judy: Photography & Beyond

Sr Judy

(Founder Poverello Prints: 1982; and, Poverello Creations: 2013)

I am a native of rural Kenosha County in Wisconsin. I can’t remember a time I didn’t want to be a Sister, as I attended Catholic schools from first grade through high school. I met many inspirational sisters over those years.

Another impactful part of my early life was the 4H. When I was 10, my mom encouraged me to take up sewing through 4H.  It wasn’t that I really wanted to sew, but my Mom knew the value of being able to sew and surprisingly, I took to it quite successfully!  Always having multiple interests at once, I soon wanted to get into photography in 4H and my mom, an avid photographer herself, took on the leadership role for photography there.

Fast forward to my entrance into the Sisters of St Francis of Assisi, just as habits were being replaced with “lay” or ‘civilian” clothes. I discovered my sewing ability came in handy and I was able to create my own blouses, skirts and slacks!  I was never far-removed from photography as my first creative passion, though.

Drawn to nature, my camera was never far from reach. In those early years, I started in black & white photography, moved on to color film and produced colored slides; ultimately, I took up digital photography. I was inspired to use nature shots and later Franciscan-themed photography to create greeting cards, many of which I wrote original verses for.

The kitchen towels with fabric toppers that I now make for online sales, our gift shop and our OSF Annual Holiday Boutique came along more recently and satisfy my deep interest in fabrics, color combinations and buttons!  I don’t throw out those scraps of left over fabric either. When I can, I make fabric coasters from them.

Just as I relish working with small, personal images in my photography …   I have plans for small wall hangings from some of the multi-image fabrics I have collected over the years.  Keep watching this site, they may show up one of these days.
