Sr. Judy: Photography as a Spiritual Passion

by | Jul 19, 2024 | About our Crafters & Artists

For as long as I can remember, I have loved the natural world. By the age of ten I had picked up my first camera. (Actually, that camera was really my mother’s old ‘Brownie’.)  My first venturing into photography was in black & white as one of my 4-H projects.  From those early beginnings, my love of nature and photography have continued to nurture me through the years.

As a Sister of St. Francis of Assisi, my love of nature has grown to a spiritual yearning where I feel the touch of God as life source in a tangible way. In an intensely spiritual way, my camera has become a tool of prayer and contemplation as I wonder through the landscape of God’s creation. Steeped in the love of St. Francis, my love and respect of creation has only deepened over the years. I strive to communicate this through my cards and photography.  My camera truly has become an extension of my spiritual life.

Now, with the aid of computer technology, I am able to design, write and create cards and prints, “Photography and Beyond.” Produced with the aid of a digital camera, computer, and software, the cards are 5×7 in size and based primarily on my photographic images of nature: landscapes, close-ups and still life.  The card verses are my original writings and are often spiritual in nature, flowing from the God connectedness I experience in the rhythm and events of daily living.

My photographic prints are often small, usually ranging in size from 4×6 to 11×14, necessitating the viewer be ‘up close and personal’ with the images. The small size of presentation has been consciously chosen in order to convey a feeling of intimacy. Currently, my prints and framed pieces are only available in our CornerStone Gift Shop here, in Saint Francis, at our Convent.

With the fact that I am now “retired”, as if a Sister ever retires, I hope to be including some of my photographic prints on this site.  Keep watching, one day you may be surprised to find them here.
